FR Skates FR1 vs FR2 vs FR3 vs FRX vs FRW – What’s the Difference?

Hello Hello, Stephen @Whataspoon here. Let's have a look at the differences between each FR skate shall we. Whether you're just getting into freeride skating or you're a seasoned city shredder, FR Skates offers a solid lineup of models built for performance, comfort, and style. But with names like FR1, FR2, FR3, FRX, and FRW, it can be tricky to know which one is right for you.

FR1 – The Premium Choice for Freeride Skaters

Best for: Advanced skaters who want top-tier performance, precision, and durability.

  • Metal buckles on the cuff and instep straps (strong and long-lasting)

  • Premium 45° ratchet strap for better heel lock

  • Metal plate in the boot sole for maximum stiffness and control

  • Removable liner with shock absorber (option to upgrade to Intuition liner)

  • Customizable: Includes side sliders, replaceable parts

  • Premium frames and wheels

Also available with the Intuition liner – a liner that brings an ultra-responsive, high-performance feel.

Ideal if you're serious about skating, want premium control, and appreciate quality materials.

FR2 – The Workhorse with Excellent Value

Best for: Intermediate to advanced skaters looking for durability without the full premium spec.

  • Plastic buckle at the cuff (instead of metal)

  • Ratchet strap at 45° (same heel lock as FR1)

  • Removable liner

  • Metal plate in the boot sole for maximum stiffness and control

  • Customizable: Includes side sliders, replaceable parts

  • Rockerable axles

  • Upgraded frames and wheels

You’re still getting a super solid freeride boot with great performance – just with a couple of swaps in hardware to keep the cost down.

Perfect if you want most of the FR1 features without the premium price tag.

FR3 – Comfort and Simplicity for Everyday Skating

Best for: Entry-level or intermediate skaters who want a smooth, reliable freeride experience.

  • Ratchet 45° strap

  • Plastic cuff buckle

  • Removable liner

  • Metal plate in the boot sole for maximum stiffness and control

  • Customizable: Includes side sliders, replaceable parts

  • Rockerable axles

  • Basic frame and wheels

The FR3 keeps the core shell shape of the FR series, so it feels great on your feet – but with simpler hardware and a more flexible setup that’s beginner-friendly.

Great for newer skaters or casual riders who still want quality and structure.

FRX/FRW – Budget-Friendly Entry Point to FR Skates

Best for: Beginners or skaters who want to try out urban skating without a big investment.

  • Velcro 45° strap

  • Plastic buckles

  • Removable Liner

  • No metal plate, just normal mounting threads.

  • Rockerable axles

  • Basic frame and wheels

The FRX and FRW share the external boot shape with higher models but simplifies everything inside and under the hood. It’s not as customizable or stiff, but it’s perfect for starting out. The FRW version comes with a brake included.

Best if you're learning or skating occasionally and want something affordable.
